Frequently asked questions
The following are some commonly asked questions about the library. If you have a question we have not answered below, feel free to contact the Library by email at askus@haltonhills.ca or by phone at 905-873-2681.
Can I renew library items online? |
Follow the steps below to renew your library materials.
- Log in and view your account.
- Click on Checkouts in the left hand column of your account.
- Titles that you have checked out are listed.
- To renew an item:
- Check the checkbox next to the titles you want to renew.
- Click the Renew Marked button.
- You will be asked to confirm that you wish to proceed with the listed renewals.
- Select Yes, if you wish to proceed.
- Items are renewed for an additional borrowing period starting from the date renewed.
- Items with Holds by other patrons will not renew.
- If you have reached maximum renewal times, you will get a message indicating that the item(s) cannot be renewed.

How can I borrow a book from another library? |
If you are not able to find what you were looking for, we can borrow items from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan. View our Borrow from Another Library page for more details. |
How can I pay for a late fine? |
All fines can be paid in-person at the Circulation Desk. If your fine is over $5.00, you have the option to pay online. The balance owing on your library account must be less than $25 in order for you to continue borrowing library materials and using some library services such as 3D printing.
Follow the steps below to pay a late fee online:
- Log in and view your account.
- Click on Fines/Fees in the left hand column of your account.
- A Pay Online button will be present when fines and fees total $5.00 or more.
- Click on the Pay Online button which will open a new window.
- Select the Fines and Fees you wish to pay by checking each appropriate box.
- Enter your complete billing information, including your full name, mailing address (that matches your choice of payment, your email address as well as your preferred payment details (Visa, Visa Debit, or MasterCard are accepted).
- Click Submit to launch the payment confirmation page.
- Click Submit one final time to process your payment.

How long can I borrow library materials? |
View our Library Cards page for loan periods and borrowing details. You can also check your checkout receipt or your online library account for due dates. |
Where can I return library materials? |
You can return your items at any time in the return slot located outside the Georgetown and Acton branches. Or you can return items inside the library when the library is open.
Please note: some items are too large or delicate to be place in the return slot. For these items, please come inside and return to the Circulation Desk.

I can't access my library account. |
We have recently updated our Library Cataloguing, which may be causing some browsers to produce an authorization failure when attempting to log into Encore.
Step 1: Please try clearing your cache.
Safari
- Launch Safari,
- Click Safari in the upper-left corner of the main menu bar and select the Preferences option near the top of the drop-down menu.
- Then click the Advanced tab located in the top navigation bar and check the box directly on the bottom that says Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar. Doing so will add a new menu to Safari by default.
- Clear the browser cache - Click the Develop menu near the middle of the upper MacOS menu bar and select the Empty Caches option.
Chrome
- Launch Chrome.
- At the top right, click More.
- Click More tools. Clear browsing data.
- At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.
- Next to "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," check the boxes.
- Click Clear data.
- Launch Firefox
- Click the button with three bars in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
- Select Options from the resulting drop-down menu.
- Clear the browser cache - Click the Privacy and Security tab located on the right side of the navigation bar and head to the Cookies and Site Data section underneath.
- Click the button Clear Data. You’ll want to make sure that the option for Cached Web Content is checked, and then press Clear.
- You can also check the box next to Delete Cookies and Site Data When Firefox Is Closed to do so automatically when you close the browser.
Apple Devices (iPhones, iPads)
- Go to Settings > Safari > tap Clear History and Website Data. Clearing your history, cookies, and browsing data from Safari won't change your AutoFill information.
Android Devices
- Open the Chrome app on your device.
- Tap the three-dot icon, found at the top right, to open a dropdown menu.
- Tap History, then Clear browsing data.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Tap the Clear data button to clear cache.
Step 2: If you continue to be unable to access our Library Catalogue, you may have to update your browser to the latest version.
NOTE: Our website (and library catalogue) are not supported by Internet Explorer. If you are accessing our library catalogue on a mobile device (including tablets and iPads), type in www.hhpl.ca manually. Refreshing the browser will not work.
