How to get a library card

Who is eligible for a library card?

You are eligible for a free library card account if you:

  • Live in Halton Hills, or
  • Work in Halton Hills, or
  • Go to school in Halton Hills, or
  • Own property in Halton Hills, or
  • Have a library card from a public library in another municipality in Halton, or selected areas of Peel or Wellington Counties

If none of the above apply, you can purchase a library card membership for $32 per year.

You can be any age and have a library membership. Applicants under the age of 14 require a parent or guardian's signature.

How can I apply for a card?

1) Online

  • The online form is for first-time applicants only. If you wish to replace a lost library card, please visit a library branch.
  • Complete the Halton Hills Public Library Card online registration form.
  • After you submit the form, you will receive confirmation by email.
  • When your library card is ready to be picked up, you will receive a second email.
  • After you receive your second email, visit any branch of the Halton Hills Public Library to pick up your card. You will need to bring identification with you to receive your card.

2) In Branch

  • Visit any service desk at your local branch of the Halton Hills Public Library and fill in an application.
  • Replacement cards needed for existing accounts can be purchased for $2.
  • To receive a full membership, you will need to show identification.
What can I do with a library membership?

With your Halton Hills Public Library card, you can:

  • Borrow library materials
  • Place items on hold, renew materials and make requests to Borrow from Another Library
  • Register for and attend programs
  • Book study space and use public computers
  • Access our online databases
  • Download eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, movies and music (Some services may not be available for card holders who live outside of Halton Hills, but do not go to school, work or own property in Halton Hills.)
  • Use the 3D printer
Renewing materials
If you would like to enjoy your book or video game a little while longer…no problem! Materials without holds can easily be renewed online, over the phone or in person.

The balance owing on your library account must be less than $25 in order for you to continue borrowing library materials and using some library services such as 3D printing and online databases.

Replacement fees for lost, damaged, or stolen items are applicable. 

Lending periods and overdue/lost items

Typical lending periods are listed below. Please check your checkout receipt or your online library account for exact dates.

Items can be renewed only if there are no holds on the title. Titles with waiting lists cannot be renewed.

Overdue notices are sent when items are 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 28 days and 34 days overdue. At 35 days, items are considered lost and a replacement charge and processing fee is added to your library account. A bill for these charges will be sent by email or mail. Payment is due within 30 days of the billing date.

The balance owing on your library account must be less than $25 in order for you to continue borrowing library materials and using some library services such as 3D printing and online resources.

Bills can be paid in person at both Library Branches. Bills over $5 can be paid online through your library account.

Accounts with balances over $100 may be placed with the Library's Collection Agency. Payment plans are available.

Always have your library card or your photo ID with you to access library services or materials. If any changes occur, such as a change of name, address or phone number, please tell staff right away. If your card is lost or stolen, please call 905-873-2681 immediately and cancel your card. Replacement cards can be purchased for $2.
