Celebrate Family Day with STEAM-Powered Fun at the Library
Family Day is Monday, February 16, 2026, and we’re inviting families to spend the afternoon exploring, creating, and learning together at the library. With hands-on science, creative building, music, stories, and a family movie, our Family Day programs are designed to spark curiosity and make learning fun for all ages.
Both library branches will be open from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., offering free, drop-in activities that blend STEAM learning – science, technology, engineering, arts, and math – with play and family time.
What’s Happening at the Georgetown Branch:
Mad Science: Up, Up and Away! – 1:30 p.m.
Get ready for an exciting, interactive science show that introduces children to the principles of air pressure and how it shapes the world around us. Families will watch as a Mad Scientist creates a hot air balloon from a dry-cleaning bag, demonstrates a “Dinosaur Sneeze,” and shows how air pressure is used to create special effects in movies. One audience member will even experience the floating power of a Mad Science Hovercraft.
Music Bingo for Teens – 2:00 p.m.
Teens are invited to test their music knowledge and pattern-recognition skills during Music Bingo. Belt out favourite tunes, play along with friends, or explore a board game and discover something new in a relaxed, social space.
What’s Happening at the Acton Branch:
Big Blue Blocks – 2:30 p.m.
Young builders can think like engineers as they design and construct with Big Blue Blocks. This hands-on activity encourages creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork as participants turn big ideas into larger-than-life creations.
Family Fun at Both Branches:
In addition to branch-specific programs, families can enjoy these activities throughout the afternoon at both locations:
-
Family Scavenger Hunt – 1:00 p.m.
-
Family Storytime – 1:30 p.m.
-
Family Movie: Elio – 3:00 p.m.
Take the Fun (and Learning) Home:
If you can’t make it to the library on Family Day, or if you’d like to keep the experience going, your library card unlocks a variety of family-friendly activities you can enjoy all weekend long:
-
Borrow a Great Backyard Bird Count kit and take part in a real-world citizen science project from February 14–17
-
Check out a Discover Together Kit to explore coding, robotics, and hands-on learning at home
-
Borrow board games, puzzles, or video games for family game time
-
Create a home theatre with items from our Library of Things
We invite families to stop by, explore something new, and spend Family Day learning and laughing together. For full program details and times, please visit our online calendar.
