Freedom to Read Week
February 22-28
Freedom to Read Week is a time to celebrate your right to explore ideas, stories, and information freely — from many points of view.
Each year, Canadians are invited to reflect on why intellectual freedom matters in our libraries, our communities, and our everyday lives. It’s about having the choice to read widely, think critically, and discover new perspectives without limits.
Join libraries across Canada as we stand up for the freedom to read, learn, and discover.
What is Intellectual Freedom?
Intellectual freedom means you get to decide what you read, watch, listen to, play, and learn — without being told what to think or believe.
It’s the freedom to ask questions, explore different ideas, and choose books and information that interest you, even when those ideas challenge assumptions or spark debate.
When intellectual freedom is protected, everyone benefits. It supports learning, creativity, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of the world — on your own terms.
