Calling all Volunteers for our new Reading Buddies Program!
The Halton Hills Public Library is seeking volunteers who are passionate about reading and working with children. Whether you're a parent, grandparent, teacher, retired or simply an avid reader, this program offers you a fantastic opportunity to share your passion for literacy while connecting with your community. As a volunteer, you must commit to completing volunteer training and leading one hour-long Reading Buddy session each week, from November to March. You can apply online from September 1 to 25. All volunteers will be required to provide a recent police check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (dated within the last 6 months).
What is Reading Buddies?
Reading Buddies is a free, volunteer-led program for children in grades 2-6. The program strives to make reading fun for kids and focuses on finding reading material that builds on each child’s unique interests and strengths. Volunteers will play literacy-based games, look for and read books in the library, and focus on fun while helping to build their reading buddy’s confidence. This is not a one-size-fits-all tutoring or homework help program; instead volunteers tailor their one-on-one reading sessions to the individual interests of each child.
The Halton Hills Public Library’s Reading Buddies program is new for the 2023 – 2024 school year and is made possible through the New Horizons for Seniors Grant Program by the Government of Canada. The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal grant and contributions program that provides funding for projects that make a difference in the lives of seniors and their communities.
At the library we know that a love of reading is the first step to becoming a lifelong learner. Share your love of reading by becoming a Reading Buddies volunteer. To sign up visit our website volunteering page. To learn more, visit our Reading Buddies program page.
