Spring Lectures _square 2022

The Halton Hills Public Library (HHPL) offers a variety of talks and lectures with guest speakers who provide inspiring, and thought-provoking discussions on many engaging topics. As the weather slowly gets warmer, HHPL is hosting lectures related to spring. Nature, climate change, gardening, and seasonal delights will all be touched upon in the following events:

Top Trees for Your Green Yard
Join Melanie Kramer from Credit Valley Conservation to discover the best native trees for curb appeal, habitat, shade and fall colour. Learn what trees will work best in your yard and what to grow with them. This event takes place Tuesday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. Register through our online calendar.

Planting a Butterflyway Garden
Do you love butterflies? Come and learn how to create a native plant garden that will attract and support native pollinators, including butterflies. Presenters Fiona Reid, author, illustrator, and Departmental Associate at the Royal Ontario Museum, and Katherine Shaw, educator and founder of the Halton Butterflyway Project will discuss the importance of native pollinators and the Halton Butterflyway Project. Participants will all receive native plant seeds to start their own gardens! This event takes place Thursday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. Register through our online calendar.

Hummingbird Migration
Explore the fascinating world of the one of the largest families of birds. Hummingbirds are tiny little guys that will surprise you, make you laugh, and leave you pondering the question that has left scientists stumped for years: just where did hummingbirds come from? Richard Tofflemire joins us to discuss how this beloved backyard bird overcomes the hardships that they must endure every day. Invasive Insects and Tree Health: Ongoing Issues and Emerging Threats
Come learn more about the LDD Moth (aka Gypsy Moth) with Bryana McLaughlin of Credit Valley Conservation. This lecture will discuss the insect, its history in Ontario, and what is currently being done in Halton Hills to address the issue. You will also learn about other emerging threats such as the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid and Asian Longhorn Beetle. Bryana will provide tips on what to look for and do if you find these invasive insects. This event takes place Tuesday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. Register through our online calendar.

One Book, One Halton Hills 2022 Author Visit
Join us for an evening with J.B. MacKinnon, author of our One Book, One Halton Hills 2022 title, The Day the World Stops Shopping. MacKinnon investigates what living with less would do to the world, and what the world would stand to gain, searching for an answer to how we can reduce our consumption to planet-saving levels without triggering the collapse of civilization. This event takes place Tuesday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. Register through our online calendar.
