A new chapter has begun in the Children's Area at our Georgetown Branch.
Created by local artist April Zheng, Fairy Tale Willow now welcomes you and your family into a vibrant space designed to spark imagination, curiosity, and a lifelong love of reading. Completed over the course of a week, the mural transforms our Children's Area into an even more engaging place to learn, explore, and connect.
Developed in collaboration with the Town's Public Art Program and made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Library, the project reflects our commitment to creating welcoming and inspiring spaces that enrich the lives of our community.
Bringing Stories to Life
Fairy Tale Willow draws inspiration from the natural beauty of Halton Hills and the magic of storytelling. The mural features a fantastical procession of characters emerging from the pages of a book. Rich with woodland imagery, playful details, and nods to childhood imagination, the artwork invites you to pause, look closely, and discover something new with every visit.
In April's own words:
"This mural is my depiction of the fairytale childhood that exists in stories and make-believe imagination. Inspiration was drawn from the nature, community, and storytelling that surrounds the Halton Hills Library. I thought about the idea of childhood games and the careful balance between mischief and honour that exists when we play. It is an homage to the trees, stories, and playmates whose effects last well beyond childhood. The fantasy procession emerging from a book features various characters and little details that I hope viewers can pick out and feel a resonance with."
April's mural practice has continued to grow since participating in the Town's 2025 Bell Box Mural Mentorship Program, which helps foster the next generation of emerging mural artists. Fairy Tale Willow represents an exciting milestone in her artistic journey and showcases the incredible talent within our local community.
Creating Inspiring Spaces
We believe our library spaces should inspire creativity, support learning, and foster meaningful community connections. Fairy Tale Willow is more than a work of art. It's an invitation for you and your family to imagine, explore, and discover together.
By blending art, literacy, and the natural world, the mural enhances your library experience while creating a welcoming environment where every visit can inspire a new story.
Community Collaboration
Fairy Tale Willow was made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Library, a dedicated volunteer group that raises funds to enhance library services, collections, programs, and spaces for our community.
"The Friends of the Library believe a strong library helps build a stronger community. We're proud to support projects like Fairy Tale Willow that create welcoming, inspiring spaces for children and families to read, imagine, and grow. Seeing the community enjoy something we've helped make possible is incredibly rewarding, and we're grateful to everyone whose support allows us to continue investing in our Library," said Mark Rowe, Chair, Friends of the Library.
The mural was also developed in collaboration with the Town's Public Art Program, demonstrating how partnerships can create meaningful community spaces while supporting local artists.
